Nigeria is seeing an increased corruption related to crude oil theft and export. As a main oil exporting country, it is battling theft and tax evasions for many years. Nigeria's oil output was at the lowest since 1990 as its crude oil production fell below 1 million barrels per day in August 2022, as a result of this large-scale corruption.
Recovering lost maritime trade taxes
The challenge
The solution
To battle this corruption, our technology helps the Nigerian government to identify tankers involved in exporting stolen or undeclared oil. Using the xyzt.ai tool, analysts correlate shipping data from AIS (Automatic Idenfication System) with export reports. AIS data consists of information of the vessels including their location, speed, draught, etc.
Using the xyzt.ai tool, analysts at the Nigerian government, can now continuously monitor maritime tanker activities, including identifying vessels active in their waters, and involved in illegal oil theft and exports.
Thanks to maritime situational awareness software we were able to recover tens of millions of lost taxes - president Muhammadu Buhari
Results
Using the xyzt.ai tool, in combination with Spire AIS data, and government tax reports, the government analysts could identify over 10 million USD in lost export taxes in a period of less than 6 months time.
